Tightrope Procedure for Dogs

What is the Tightrope Procedure?

The Tightrope CCL procedure is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to treat cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries in dogs. The CCL is similar to the ACL in humans and plays a crucial role in stabilizing a dog’s knee (stifle) joint. When this ligament tears or ruptures, it can cause pain, limping, and long-term joint damage.

The Tightrope procedure offers a less invasive alternative to traditional surgeries like TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) or TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement), while still providing excellent joint stability.

How Does It Work?

Instead of cutting or altering the bone like in TPLO, the Tightrope procedure involves:

  • Drilling small holes in the femur and tibia (thigh and shin bones)
  • Inserting a strong synthetic fiber ligament (often made of a Kevlar-like material)
  • This ligament is secured under tension, mimicking the natural function of the CCL
  • The result is immediate stabilization of the knee joint with less surgical trauma

Benefits of the Tightrope Procedure

✅ Minimally invasive – less damage to bone and soft tissues

✅ Shorter recovery time compared to some traditional methods

✅ Stable joint movement post-surgery

✅ Cost-effective compared to TPLO or TTA

✅ Appropriate for small to large breed dogs

Is My Dog a Candidate?

Tightrope surgery is typically recommended for:

  • Dogs of medium to large breeds
  • Pets who are not ideal candidates for bone-cutting procedures
  • Dogs with partial or complete CCL tears
  • Owners looking for a non-osteotomy surgical option

We will evaluate your dog’s age, size, activity level, and overall health to determine if this technique is the best fit.

What to Expect: Recovery & Rehabilitation

Recovery typically involves:

  • 8–12 weeks of restricted activity
  • Short leash walks and physical therapy exercises
  • Follow-up visits to monitor healing
  • Gradual return to normal activity after clearance from us.

With proper post-operative care, most dogs return to a happy, active lifestyle.
