Veterinary Medical Acupuncture

Veterinary Medical Acupuncture (VMA) involves the insertion of tiny, sterile needles into specific points throughout the body. Medical acupuncture is an adaptation of traditional Chinese acupuncture. Instead of relying on inexact metaphors to describe the way the body responds to treatment VMA uses current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology all in keeping up with well-studied medicine.

The effects of acupuncture begin with activating nerve fibers near a specific needle insertion point. The stimulus from the needle causes changes that help balance nerve signaling to help the nervous system communicate better with itself and to other structures in the body. Acupuncture also works to release tension from muscles and surrounding tissue called fascia.

VMA is used in conjunction with modern medicine and other related techniques of laser therapy and massage therapy to promote health and well-being by preventing illness and addressing a variety of medical conditions and pain problems both chronic and acute including:

  • Digestive ailments including inflammation and motility problems
  • Respiratory issues such as sinusitis and recurrent infections
  • Neurologic problems such as peripheral neuropathy, sciatica, spinal cord injury, disc disease, urinary and fecal incontinence and nerve-based pain problems
  • Musculoskeletal complaints including knee pain, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, hip dysplasia, back pain, neck pain and much more

Dr. Teply has been trained in a specific type of physical examination called myofascial palpation which determines the location and sources of discomfort and dysfunction. The myofascial exam along with gait analysis, a physical exam and thorough history are combined with the goals for the patient to determine the most appropriate treatment protocol tailored to each patient’s specific needs. Acupuncture treatments are performed in a calming, relaxing environment and you are encouraged to attend each session with your pet.
